I think that this situation is intolerable. And I’m not at all surprised that this law was passed, given that it was not put to voters, and that the wording was so carefully crafted so that people wouldn’t realize what it was - essentially a breed ban law - until it was too late.

What do you all think?

  1. Dog Lover says:

Man, this is so totally messed up! It’s the irresponsible dog owners who should be sterilized, not the dogs. It’s not their fault!

  2. Chris F. says:

We need that law in New Mexico. There ARE certain breeds that are much more dangerous than others.

  3. Mary says:

A friend sent me this link…but I really don’t see the problem here. Seems like a way to reduce pet overpopulation.

  4. Amanda says:

This is terrible. These dogs cannot be held responsible for the way that some owners raise them. Some of the sweetest dogs I’ve encountered are breeds they want to ban.

  5. N.Doe says:

It’s the owners that are the problem, not the dogs!

There ARE certain people that are more dangerous than others yet we dont steralize and destroy them.

There are people who continue to breed yet we dont worry about over population of human race.

We’re more dangerous and destructive as a species than these innocents who have been given no choice because their owners are ignorant, cruel and taking up space on this planet that a better deserving creature deserves.

  6. Dogsarethebest says:

    THIS IS WRONG! .

  10. ratedK says:

Tell you what, I just heard about this & posted this blog:

I’m not a pitbull owner myself. However, I do have a rottweiler. Probably the next breed on the “list.” I understand that these breeds are discriminated against - NOT because of their probability to bite, but the severity of their bites. It makes perfect sense. I pay a higher insurance rate because of it. Most companies will not even insure a home if they know you care for one of these breeds. The majority of people are overcritical of the breed. In this case a few bad apples have spoiled the whole bunch.

And all black men are criminals - just like all white men are psychopathic killers. Just ignorant stereotypes.

In reality, the dog will turn into what the owner raises it to be. What you (as a parent or dog owner) set forth as acceptable behavior directly reflects how they will respond in the future. You beat your dog & give it negative reinforcement, chances are, it’s going to bite somebody for no apparent reason. I can say that I’ve done the exact opposite and [my dog] has been the perfect pet.

First off, my dog is very protective of my house…. or should I say HIS house. In all honesty, my dog has bitten twice. Both times it was a stranger in HIS home. Both times, the stranger walked in to HIS house unannounced & unescorted (i.e. I didn’t come & answer the door). Both times, he didn’t bark or stop the stranger from entering. He let them come in & bit them both in the ass. I wouldn’t have it any other way. If someone he doesn’t know comes into HIS house to steal MY shit - damn right I’m gonna find that fucker on the floor the next morning. What can I say? The Beware of dog sign is posted for a reason. This is my dogs protective nature to his master. Dogs of all sizes & shapes will do whatever they can to protect their master. You can train a dog to attack - which is NOT what I’ve done. You can’t train a dog to protect - that’s something they’ll learn from a loving home. Proir to having my dog, I’d had two houses & my car broken into. Hasn’t happened since. If it’s never happened to you - the feeling of being violated is hardly explainable. You’ll no longer have a sense of security… But I’m not bitter. Enough of the negative reinforcement. Moving on.

Away from his element, [my dog] is a nice guy. Happy to go for a ride & loves to meet everybody. I’ve got a huge back yard, but we still go to the dog park so he can meet & greet. I think that a dog has to fulfill a quota of ass-sniffing on a regular basis for it to be a sociable animal. We’ve been making a regular trip to [a bar] in Broadripple because they’re animal friendly… Last week there were at least 6 other people there with their dogs… Oddly enough, [my dog] is the one getting growled at. He’s never the growler.

One day I’m working in my front yard & I’ve got the dog out with me. Next thing I know, [my dog] is heading toward a lady walking her dog across the street. (Maybe we hadn’t fulfilled our ass-sniffing quota for the month?) Big white foofy dog… Chow or Chow mix, anyways… This woman freaks out! She picks up her dog (Imagine a skinny black woman trying to pick up a big white foofy dog) Mind you, [my dog] is not being agressive in any way - which I KNOW he wouldn’t. She wasn’t worried about herself, she’s worried him hurting her dog. “Don’t let him hurt my dawg!” “Don’t let him hurt my dawg!” She’s screaming! All the while, I’m trying to subside this womans fears of my mean ‘ol rottweiler hurting her dog, but she didn’t want to hear anything I had to say. He was just trying to sniff her dogs ass. She just continued to freak out (understatement). Bitch probably went home all spastic tellin’ people how she almost got attacked by some rottweiler. Her mentality - just at the sight of [my dog] - was completely unprovoked. Maybe she had reason to be afraid? Some incident in her past? Unfortunately, that’s the mindset most people have…

Along those lines, I went camping with a large group of friends out near Mississinewa. We’re out in a fairly secluded place where there’s a playground & a large open space playing some frisbee. Parks usually require that pets be on a leash, so I attatch [my dogs] leash to his collar & let him run free. At some point while I’m throwin’ the frisbee, some little boy of 6 or 7 years old goes over to Malik & starts petting him… not a minute later, Some guy comes to me asking if it’s my dog. I’m thinking “Yeah, yeah, he’s on a leash - look.” The guy continues on about how the kid petting my dog is his son and conveys that he’s surprised his son even approached my dog. Proceeds to tell me he how his son was bitten a few years before by some dog & has had a fear of them since. The guy is astonished that his son just approached my dog out of the blue. Looking back, I’m thinking that this kids fear was probably perpetuated by his parents fear of him being bitten (again). If that kid had never met my dog would he still have that fear? Was it a good thing that this kid was to young to know the “bad breed” stereotype?

Back to the point - it’s how they’re raised. As of June, my dog is 10 1/2 years old. I’ve cared for him for almost his whole life. Rescued from the Humain Society when he was about 4 months old. It’s an experience I would not trade for anything. Grey has started to take over his face. He’s an old man now and I dread the day that he dies. If someone were to pass a law that took away his right to live out his remaining years, they would have to come through me first. Leftovers would be fed to the dog.

  11. Allie says:

  i had NO idea they were doing that to dogs! It needs to be stopped, asap. Before all the states start doing it, and maybe cats are next.

  12. Brad says:

How Many People Die Due To McDonalds Hamburgers? Probally Thousands A Year. Now, How Many People Die Because Of Pitbulls? 5-7 A Year, If That. Which One Is More Dangerous, California?

  13. Kirsten In WV says:

I live in WV. Our county just passed a law stating that either you have your pit put to sleep…OR, you have 100,000 insurance policy, have them muzzled, AND have a 10ft fence around them with a top on it.
I do have a pitbull…and there is NO way I can afford that kind of policy. It will just kill my family if they take our dog. He is a GREAT dog! He would die for any member of my family, and then some. The thought of them taking him just kills me inside. He is 2 years old. My friend works for the animal shelter and they found him in a house when he was only 3 weeks old…weighing about a pound. He was left there to die. My friend knew that we had just put our pitbull to sleep. He was an old guy..he is greatly missed! So, she gave us a call. He was very sick for awhile…but you couldn’t tell it now. He is full of energy and LOVES to sleep in bed with us, under the covers. He is so loyal to my family. I just love him so much. His name is Noah. So if you could, please say a prayer for him and pray that he too….dies of old age. Thank you and God Bless!

  17. Leesa says:

u dont think its the dogs faults the owners are the ones that teach them to hurt ppl and attack they need to be punished not the dogs…..so the dogs that are just loveable are being banned to thats wrong and the government sucks and im blaming them!

  18. ILoveBulls says:

I own 3 pit bulls and they have to be the 3 best dogs I’ve ever owned. I don’t believe I’ll ever own a different breed. Luckily I live in a small southern town, where if the thought of banning pit bulls or other powerful breeds even crossed someone’s mind, there would be a major war around here. I think BSL is unconstitutional and I agree that it is 100% the owner’s fault for not having control of their animal. Powerful breeds are not for everyone and you have to be even more stubborn than a pitbull in order to properly control him/her. There are always going to be people who are too ignorant or scared to form their own opinions and settle for what the media or other like-minded people tell them. Unfortunately there are a lot of these people in a place of power and you see what happens.

  19. Suzi says:

 This deeply bothers me. I adore larger breed dogs. My mother, on the other hand, buys into every little snippet of hype about almost anything, therefore, I can’t own one. She lives her life in fear of any breed of dog that gets larger than her shin. I’ve had friends and family all my life that have owned large/”dangerous” breed dogs and I have never been bitten by any of them in a way that makes me feel threatened. The world needs to understand that it is rarely the animals fault. They are simple creatures, who, under the right supervision, do only as they are told. If you teach an animal to be violent, they will be, no matter what kind of animal it is. It is our fault, as owners and trainers of said animals, if the animals turn out violent. People are the problem, not the dogs. The problem with this theory is that most people refuse to accept responsibility for their actions, refuse to believe that it’s not some obscene instinct inside these dogs. The world needs to wake up.

  20. B0link says:

I am almost getting to be ashamed to live in and defend this so called mockery of a “free land”. Between the patriot act, the “anti-terrorist” acts, general big brother monitoring, this country is slowly losing all that it once stood for. And now you are going to tell me what dog I can or cant have?

My pets are allready spayed. I have a female Pit Bull/ German Shepard mix who is one of my most valued parts of my life second only to my family. But if you try to take her away from so help me god! She would prtoect me to the death, I wouldnt give her any less. Extreme? Yes. But look at it this way.

Dogs give out nothing but unconditional love. Think about it. Even when you dont have time to throw a frisbee with them, or take them for a walk, or maybe you have to take them for that dreaded vet visit…

Do they hold that against you? Do they remember that the next day?
Does your dog care what you dress like? Act like? LOOK like? The color of your skin?

No, all they know is love. And they know how to do it better than any human ever could, and in a way (non verbal) that is more difficult.

Don’t kill the dog, sterilize the damn owner. That should ward off most attacks.

  21. Blake says:

I kno this doesnt concern me YET living in alabama, but i have a 150 pound rockweiler( how ever the spelling is) who wouldnt here a fly unless she was defending me and yet a friend of mine has a little sweet chiwawa who has drawn blood to my ankle several times. so its not the breed of dog it is the owners and how the dog is cared for. so in my words” this law sucks ass”

  22. Mary says:

 This infuriates me!! I am not a California resident, but I think it is absolutely absurd that politicians are wasting their time passing laws about dogs when my friends and family are in Iraq getting shot and killed!! What a waste of putting someone in office. Things are getting scary in America, it’s like we’re heading down a path to tyrannicism (not sure if that’s a word, but you get the point). I am a dog owner, I love my dog and I think that to have a politician try to come in to my personal life and say that I can’t have my dog is like taking a child away from it’s mother!! This is absolutely ridiculous and useless! DEFEAT SB861!!

  23. Rebecca says:

Hello, I do not live in California, but in Kansas, and a few months ago, Kansas City passed an ordinance similar to this that banned pit bulls. There has been a widely circulated myth that in the state of Kansas pit bulls are illegal anyway and it is not true. But Kansas City passed this ordinance, without putting it to a vote, and it passed. All pit bulls found within the city limits were put to sleep. It enraged me. I have had many dealings with pits and not a one of them tried to hurt or maul me. When I was a child, my mother had one and she was the most docile dog I’d ever been around.

The state of California is setting a precedent that I believe will soon be a law all over the country. I have posted a link to your website on my web page and I have friends that live in California that are just as appalled as I am. They are fighting as well to get this law repealed. I just felt the need to let you know that there are people in other parts of the country that agree with you, and are hoping and praying that this doesn’t happen anywhere else and that this is not allowed to go into effect.

  24. Squeaks says:

 every time that i hear someone say things about certain dogs being very aggresive and just putting them down it makes me mad. simply because i have two pit bulls. they are the best dogs i have EVER had. great with kids and just all around great pets! its all about the owner of the dogs. they are just like children. if you raise your kid the correct way then the child isnt going to turn out bad… same thing with dogs. if you teach the dog the right way then its not going to be aggresive and its not going to be a good responsive dog. i really hope that this doesnt go through.

  25. Elise says:

 a dog is not bad on its own its the owners fault and plus dogs were used to hunt in the old days why would u want to kill somthing that helped us servive would u feel right if ur kid was being put to sleep because they hit someone or did somthing stupid they are just dogs

  26. leslie says:

 I have three Pit bulls, And they are just big babies. I’ve raise pits for 25 years and I’ve never had a problem with them. I believe it all depends on how they are raised.

  27. dog lover says:

um..this is new for me. im a 13 year old who at this point i believe has more sense than the government of california and anyone else who agrees with this disgraceful discrimination against breeds of dogs! my eyes are watering because this hurts! i used to have a pit bull who i loved dearly!!!!! her name was baby and she was my favorite animal to own!!! its funny cause we wernt supposed to keep er but we did!!! i fell in love with someone who was there for me whenever i needed her and who let me grab her ears her when i was little! she never ever posed a threat to the wellbeing of me or anyone else in my family because we provided her with love and warmth and a place in our hearts!!! it hurts to know that there are cruel people out there who have nothing better to do than to sit and bud into other peoples lives!!! to cause pain and hurt where its not called for! isnt that what they dedicated forces strive to keep of the steats every day but yet its in the people who run the state!!!!!!!! it kills to know that they can discriminate against animals who dont have a say in the way they are trained…they dont know what right from wrong is! whats sad is that they love their owner SO much that even though their owner can be the most wanted criminal in the country but theyd still be faithful and do what the owner wanted or dedmanded they do. my teacher once said that he would shoot every pit bull that he sees in the streat and then we got in this discussion. i asked him why and he said cause one bit him….replying i said well if one white man shot someone does that mean there are no white men out there that should be able to live in the united states???? that were all the same…cause my momma tought me that were all different and that was what was so special about us!! i think that also applys to animals as well..they’re not all the same!! i have one dog that is as stupid as a brick wall and i love her for it!!!! thats what makes her special to me..on the other hand i have another dog who is very protecive of me and my family!! and i love him for that.because he makes me feel safe. they are two very different dogs but they both mean alot to me,and i couldnt imagine life without them. and i couldnt imagine life without my pitbull(who unfortunatly died of old age) but i manged because i knew that i gave her the best life possible. i loved her and all she ever wanted to do was to make me happy. to keep me safe and to be my best friend. i could tell her everything and she would listen. and even when i got mad at her she forgave me in no more than two seconds. i dont think i can continue because this hurts to much…hopefully soon we can force them to stop this law. unfortunatly i am not a resident of california or anywhere else that supports this law, but i will do all that i can to help stop this Discrimination Against Dogs law!!!!!!!

  28. oscar says:

    Every year in the usa…

440,000 people die due to cigarettes
40,00 people die in a car accidents
38,000 children die from gun shot related injuries
2,000 are killed by thier parents
    3 are kiled by pitbulls

so were does the real epidemic lie?

  29. Kirstene says:

Chris, you dont know what you are talking about. I also live in New Mexico. The dogs shouldnt be punished for something they are taught by their owners, not just themselves. Yes they are known to kill, but if you teach them differently they will know differently. You are heartless and everyone else is also for even thinking this. A majority of these dogs dont deserve to die just because some of their family has kill or attacked others. Yall need to think of that also. These dogs can be man and womans best friend, but yall people dont want to allow them to even try.
In think there should be a law as to who owns them but not just to get rid of them. They can be the best dogs anyone can have. But yall dont care about that do you?????
You are just talking to the people that have been hurt by this breed, not to the people who matter just as much, the owners of this breed. They will tell you as they have done here that they are some of the best dogs anyone can own. and i would like to see you people tell any of us differently.

    Sincerely,
A dog owner, lover, and vet.
    K.C Artesia, New Mexico

And just to let everyone posting these comments this isnt for all of you because you agree with me and yall have the sense to know better unlike these stupid politicians in Cali. Also to everyone who reads this im sorry for spelling its just when im mad I scramble alot so…. just a little note.

  30. alaskandogowner says:

 this just boggles me.. i ask all of you to forgive the government for their false upbringing.. we shouldnt blame them for learning false fears.. nor blame other countries for terrorizing americans.. people and animals grow in similar ways… if i were to have a child and teach this child all there is to fear in this world… and my opinions of who to hate.. then who will my child grow to be… if i taught the same to my dog.. who would she grow to be… our cultures reapeat themselves because people fear change… why.. because theyd have to admitt they were wrong.. we will continue to see hate of all kinds.. untill people learn to change… “how can you change something if you cannot change yourself” besides.. you ellect these people to create these hateful things… therefore you are being punished… also if you dont understand the paragraphs your reading when checking yes or no then id advise you to find out exactly what your voting for or against prior to election days… they have little offices that provide you with information on upcoming ballots.. so when you see balott measure such and such and all the grammer that is so confusing.. check YES or NO.. your well aware… so again actually forgive yourselves first then those who you voted for… hate is not a breed nor ethnicity it is taught and passed on to whomever or whichever will soak up the nonsence of the teacher.. which makes them feel superior..
    .

  31. Sydney says:

Any dog, not matter what the breed, is what his owner makes him out to be… it is stupid ignorant people who believe the bad name of pit bulls and even dumber and more ignorant people who make the bad name of pit bulls. You cant wipe out and entire breed just because certain people dont understand and use them for the wrong reason. Dont punish the dogs, punish the people… because no innocent familyl dog should be ripped from its family and killed because somebody else made a similar dog mean

  32. Megan says:

:???: When I was training my Doberman Pinshcer one of the other dogs in the class was a pit bull. She was one the nicest dogs I had ever met. So I am completely against this law. Also Dobermans are probably on the “list” also. And yes the Doberman I had was wild and crazy and didn’t know his own strength but he was also a sweetheart underneath it all. So like everyone else is saying it is wrong to judge breeds by a couple of examples and it is normally the owners fault if the dog is that mean.

  33. joan says:

i have two pitbulls and i have had them since they were 6 weeks old and they would never hurt a soul. someone even broke into our house and stole lots of things and neither one of them bit them or hurt them whatsoever (even though it may have been someone who had been in the house before that they have met)! they have been taught better than that! even though it might have been nice if they protected the house alittle better…i didnt really want them to because they could have been shot or hurt badly. as most of you have already said it’s the way you raise them! if someone took away my babies i would die!!!

  34. Stephanie says:

Of all the animals that should be banned from the state, dogs are our least worries. If you want to ban animals, ban rapists, murderers, and abusers. Those are the only animals this state can do without.

  35. Jessica says:

 I think if the government wants to pass a stupid law, they should try this one. Why ban breeds? Why don’t you set up a screening process for potential owners? Make sure the dog won’t be put in the situation where it has to fight or become aggressive. It’s not the breed that is the problem, it is the owners of the dog in question. So just make sure the crappy owners don’t have the option to own! Some of us treat our pitts (or Rotties or shepards or whatever) with love and respect. Why should our families and our pets be punished for someone else’s stupidity? Try to take my dog or tell me what I have to do with him, and I promise, you’ll be limping away. Our dog is family to us. And we won’t give him or his future up for anyone. Even Legislature.

  36. mike says:

what the fuck pits are not mean any dog is mean. if you love the dog care for him the dog is good no dog is just born mean what the fuck

  37. Jessica says:

 Look deep into my loving eyes
Please, tell me what you see?
Do you see a savage monster?
Or do you just see me?

I long to lick your hand
And place my paw upon your knee
I long to feel your loving touch
And hear you speak to me

Please tell me that you care for me
And that you love me too
Please don’t be afraid of me
For I would never hurt you

My life has only just begun
    Please don’t shut me out
I can’t understand these things you do
    Or why you sometimes shout!

Have I been bad? Please let me know
    Help me to understand
Why I have to stay chained up
And from the house been banned

Why must I wear this muzzle?
    Whenever we go out?
Why do children run away from me?
    And Mothers sometimes shout?

I wag my tail, I give a smile
I want to be their friend
But they see me coming and run inside
    I just dont understand

    Why do they fear me?
What is it that I’ve done?
I’m just a dog, I’m full of love
With a heart that’s full of fun

I will always stand beside you
And guard you til the end
I’d give my life to save you
I will always be your friend

    Whenever I see you cry
I will kiss away your tears
    I’ll sit beside you quietly
    And listen to your fears

I will walk with you for hours
    And never once complain
But why oh why when we get home
Must I go back on that chain?

    I just don’t understand it
I used to lay beside your bed
I’d softly kiss your hand as you’d reach out
    To stroke my faithful head

    And sometimes during the night
I’d hear you cry softly in your sleep
I’d place my head upon your bed
    And listen to you weep

I’d lovingly offer you my paw
It’s then you’d draw me near
You’d wrap your arms around me tight
    Until your tears disappeared

But now I hear you crying
And there’s nothing I can do
I long to nuzzle you lovingly
And give my heart to you

This chain has kept me locked up
I’m a prisoner for your love
    I’ve never done anything wrong
Except be a loyal, loving dog

    Every year at Christmas Time
We would always go to town
I’d dress up in tinsel and reindeer horns
You’d laugh and call me “your clown”

    We’d walk around the city
    Up and down the street
People of all ages would hug me
And kneel down at my feet

They would always say things like
“Can I have a photo, with the cute reindog deer?”
The children would wrap their arms around my neck
And whisper excitedly in my ear

I’d stand like that for hours
Listening to all the children’s wishes
    Listening to their hearts desires
But now, why are things so different?

Where once they ran towards me
    They run the opposite way
Where once theyd hug and cuddle me
    And sometimes even play

Whats happened to make things different?
Please tell me what I can do?
Im still the same, I havent changed
    My loving hearts still true

People now are mean to me
They say that I should die
They say I cant be trusted
And that I have no rights

    They’ve taken away my dignity
    My freedom and my life
They muzzle me and chain me
    But my spirits still alive

No matter what is done to me
    No matter what they do
No matter how they try to break me
My love for you stays true

So, please dont let them hurt me
I am still Mans Best Friend
A dog sent down from Heaven
To love you to the end

The Lord above he sent me
To be your loyal, loving dog
He said that you would love me
I am your gift from God

    Please look beyond my name
And you will see my heart is full
Of love that is beyond compare
For I am a Proud Pitbull

    Please Help Save Me………

i am a proud pitbull owner in new mexico i can tell all the iggnorant people that might read this thinking pitbulls are bad that they are the most caring loving dog u can have. in some towns here they have banned pitbulls and all iknow is that if they try it in my town the only way they are getting my dogs is through me, i will fight them off to the death, my dogs would protect me in the same way so why not show them the same love back? leave our pits alone, if you dont like them stay away from them. i have never had a pit turn on me for any reason at all. if u have been bit by a pitbull its probably because you messed beat them or abused them in some way, dont mistreat something that can kick your ass, if u had a pet lion you wouldnt mistreat them, so why mistreat a pit?
the sad thing is ppl are treating pits like monsters and all they ever did was want to be loved. no pit is lost and if you have a pit that you think will never have a chance at being nice give us a call at 1-505-715-9680 we will personally pay for shipping for you to send us the so called “untameable dog” thanx for reading this

How could our government pass a law to destroy an entire breed of dogs??? What did they do to you? I understand people get attacked by dogs, but it isn’t just dogs people get attacked by everything including ourselves. It is not fair to single out one specific breed or animal to destroy. We may as well destroy ourselves for attacking each other. A dog is not naturally viscous it is taught to do the thinks it does by the person who taught it do it. It is not our animals that our viscous it is the people. They should not punish our dogs because of the irresponsible assholes that can’t handle just having a dog and not using as a weapon. They should be punishing these people. Our dogs are innocent. I ask the question how would they feel if someone took their dog and killed it just because of the way it looked or the breed? I don’t think they would like it much.

So to all you immature, irresponsible fucks who can’t handle a dog. Thank you… For ruining it for some child out there who had a dog but got it taken away and killed because it was a Pit Bull. Thank you for ruining everyone else’s chance of having an animal to keep them company or from having their best friend. Thank you for being an immature, irresponsible, selfish bastard!!!

This includes Arnold for even signing the stupid law. I hope you get what is coming to you…
    What goes around comes around.

Our animals don’t deserve this. If it happens to mine heads will be rolling!!!!
